Just busted my roll on boss media HU tbls. ended up really deepstacked,with 7bi on 1 table and 6 on another and lost set v set, and blah blah blah. Variance.
I blame the PokerStars skin I put on it.

I am over in Ireland visiting family for a week or two as I have been getting into a bad routine over in London involving getting up, checking my search engine rankings (I own a bunch of websites, so this is part of the daily routine) and playing donkaments all day and boozing / playing pool / getting baked on weekends. The grinding MTTs was pretty soul destroying for a while as i ran superbad over a 2 month period (as I have whinged in previous posts) - so a holiday was definitely something I needed to regain my focus and my poker Mojo, if such a thing exists.
I started grinding headsup on one of my boss media accounts, starting small (100nl) and moving up to 200nl once I had 10-15 Buyins. I had some notable, long and very fun and swingy duels with a guy called r1ckj4ames (we’ve duelled a few nights and I’m up over a few k hands), and some other bums. This change back to heads-up was really what I needed to focus the mind and soul on poker, and I thank god for the deucescracked videos I used to watch, they are priceless for what they taught me about aggression, hand-reading etc.

in short, cash is king!
- Short sessions for the win.
- if you’re playing, don’t play tired, don’t drink, don’t smokoe doobies
- Bumhunting rules - avoid the regs on 10 tables.. play the hungarian tiltmonkey instead!
- A chatban costs you EV. If you’re chatbanned, you can’t tell the fish that you want to play him on 4 tables, or move up limits. This is very very important!
I got backed on merge by one of the new skins hoping to build up a good team of poker players. I played a few MTTs on there and I have a 255% ROI in the mtts (yeh obv over a tiny sample, but zomg they are sooooft.).. I have yet to win a HU session but I’ve only played 2.. players are either rocks or nits from what I have seen, and there’s not enough traffic to make it your #1 site for now.. but there’s a merger happening soon w/ playersonly and sportsbook.com coming to merge, so that will bring in liquidity and good potential equity, so more on that soon.

loads of 10rs added to the daily schedule on boss media should effectively mean that grinding all day is a freeroll.. all u gotta do is dodge the RNG.
I’m back on boss (was 10-12 tabling today, weee), came 2nd in the 4k last night, won the 6max today and just busted 5th in 1 of the 3k’s, guy won’t fold aqo for 30bb pre, oh well.
could be worth grinding the boss media MTT tournament leaderboard, as there’s a chance to win a 10k wsop package, and the games are soft. IF u have the time it’s +EV for sure.
oh yeh, since i am talking about 10k packages, well done to the cortster (an ex boss media regular) for a deep run in the 2010 Aussie Millions main event. ($40k). Check out his poker blog.

It’s funny how many random expressions you hear can relate to poker. I was visiting my family in Ireland for a week, and was chatting to my mother briefly about some final tables I had made in the last 2 days (2nd place and like 6th) on bossmedia (where I used to make a decent living back in 2008 grinding Midstakes Mtts). I told her that I have given up on the big moneypit sites (Stars and FTP), with massive fields and the huge variance that they bring. and that I’m going back to basics to grind up a 30-50k roll on small euro sites ASAP.. Yes, I’m back on Boss-Media.

That’s true I said, but then I actually tried in my mind to quantify how right she was, and in which respects.. here’s my shortlist:
Why play poker on a small eurodonk network:
- Given the smaller fields, the variance is hell-a-smaller. Winner. No more waiting a week for a final table in something.. constant performance feedback via more cashes keeps you motivated, and slowly but surely booking ok wins which can add up to 10-15k a month if you run good, and maybe 5-8k if u just play good.
- u get to know the regulars and build up a great set of notes due to constant observation … Very +EV
- small networks have smallish buy-in donkaments = weak players. do the math.
- game selection: u gotta know what’s worth playing. On Boss it’s the 40ds, 20ds, early 10r and the 3r. Anything else is crapshooty and really not worth bothering with imo. (The 100k was sick structure for a week or 2 but now it’s meh, but I guess they added some extra levels which is nice)
- strategically impaired players adding dead money: The smallest rebuys are even worth playing, as most players don’t understand that they should double rebuy and gamble to get a stack. they are too tight and inevitably even a half decent player has a massive edge meaning an easy 500-900 euro from a 3euro rebuy.. easy to run deep/final table these and omg raping the bubble is like taking candy from a dead baby.
- Rakeback, nearly forgot. 30% rakeback on pokerheaven (boss media) is the nizzles. I play on pokerheaven now since Celeb Moved to iPoker (bye bye to my golden nhggfu screenname sigh), so for now I am playing on PH. Rb = at least 1-2k a month just from MTTs.
In summary, Game selection, constant drool-worthy and mental state propping performance feedback, and reads / notes on everyone, makes being a big fish in a small pond profitable FTW. I’ll add graphs later as I want this post to encourage me not to go spazzing my roll or playing 25/50.

Not updated this in ages, but generally I am thinking screw poker right now.. running real bad and I am consistently losing 80/20’s, 70/30s when it matters over what feels like a big sample. I can win mtts, just not on my own accounts.. hmmm.
typical stuff I am whining about:
For top 5 w/ 33 left in the 100k on boss only 22k for 1st, obv I can’t hold when I am a sick favorite.
MiniFtops 6max. w/ these stacks and w/ 46k for 1st, this is just sick.

always the same shit, minicashes or ridic suckouts. I’ve whiffed some 32k and 30k scores on ftp/stars and just can’t seem to final table anything on there.. plenty of final 30s, last 50’s in the brawl etc, but never winning the final flips while deep.. So I’m moving down to low stakes mtts on European sites for a bit till I build my roll..
Queue up the self-bans from the two highest variance MTT money pits. I know over xmas I will get boozed up and try to play the 109s etc on ftp/stars, so this is a good idea:

Tiny Brag / EDIT: Obviously since I decided to grind smaller stuff, I created a PKR account with rakeback since my pokerbuddy benjones keeps telling me how soft it is. I played 2 mtts (5$ and 25$ 6max) to try the site out, and while the software is tilting, the players are ABC/Nits/Terribad, so I came 2nd in the 25$ 6max for 546$ (I lose 88 < ajo all in pre for a gazillion chips vs a regular heads-up) , so a good start to the grind on the eurodonk sites. Here’s my stats page on PKR.. I’ll try to get it up to 15-20k by end of Feb hopefully.

I logged in to bossmedia after cashing out the other day (as I don’t play there much anymore since they fucked up the structures and payouts of every mtt). I had $100 rakeback as it was the start of the month, so rather than deposit, I ran it up to over €1500 by bumhunting low stakes while doing some other stuff.
It seemed logical to go out on the sauce on friday night and to sit down and €1000 nl cash tables while drunk for a little spin up.

I started playing a bit on pokerstars this week as I am in Stockholm, sweden and can’t install my usual boss-media shit on my work laptop.
Stockholm.. Niiiice place, niiiiiiiiiiiiiiice ladies.
So I played the $50 buy-in $80,000 guaranteed, and managed to hack my way thru the (uber soft) field. 3 handed I had 3.5mill to 2 mill to like 700k (retard), then retard runs good (total herocalling station with no fold button btw) and I end up headsup with the idiot. Of course he doesn’t ever fold so my usual headsup strategy of pot control and postional play is useless. Minring in position is just a waste too and cbetting is a no-no as he calls everything, seriously. So anyway he chips me down a bit, then I get rivered in the most ridiculous hand ever.
I had some cool railers from 2p2 MTT community (<3), my forum (ukgf) and some of my msn poker buddies which is always fun when you final table a biggie.

So REAL quick report of the last month:
1- moved to London for sicko job / networking and to be near the big poker games. winner.
2- started sicko job (SEO chillax job)
3- Got out of work for a bit of a skive while the Unibet Open was on in the vic in london, ended up working there interviewing players, doing live webcast and stuff and commentating on the feature table on day 2 right down to the final table for live stream and DVD which I guess might make it onto pokertube too. I interviewed Mike McDonald Timex (holla), Lucy Rockach (fail interview srlsy - I was talking about a different hand than she rambles on about I swear..), james sudworth, michael greco (still high off his $250k win at WSOP) and some others, some of the vids are on http://youtube.com/unibetopen, some are still in the digital ether for now. I was amazed at how irish I sound despite 10 years living in Scotland. ach well Oh I also Interviewed miss belgium 2008. no Idea where the interview went, this sure isn’t it. BTW the unibet open had sickest struct ever 10k stack, 60 min levels and a managable 2.5k buyin iirc. Next event in Prague, I’ll try to get a seat sorted I think.
4- some good spinups at poker and the usual carnage KKK no good etc. - thx @ betfair who gave me a free $100 to come back to play on their “interesting” poker client. anyway I managed to spin that up headsup 100nl to 650$ last night in <1 hr. such fun.
5- oh yeh just heard today my old chums at CelebPoker are moving to iPoker, so looks like I will have to find a new boss skin to play on.

quick update, it’s been ages..
grinded a sick stack in the $255 sunday brawl, was like 30/100 left so I swapped 10% with my mate tom (Polo Mint on PokerStars, who was also sick deep in the sunday warmup)
So I get dealt Ajs and I decide to put the pressure on another bigstack for the chiplead. He isn’t folding and i miss a gazillion outs and bust. On the flop I decided I wasn’t folding as I was a mega favorite against any hand with a gutshot royal fliush draw and nut flush draw and straight draw.
The turn is maybe a bit spewy, but I really thought I could get villain to fold the best hand, and I could still hit river anyway . No bink on river, . GG me, GG life, and GG 143K Pot.
